Dear readers,

Vocabulary plays an important role in the preparation of English Section. In the following post, we have taken out 10 difficult words from "The Hindu Editorial", these words will help in  improving your performance in upcoming exams.

1. RAKISH (ADJECTIVE): Charming and immoral

Synonyms: dashing, jaunty                  
Antonyms: moral, upright
Example Sentence: She gave Maddy a rakish smile.

2. ENGROSS (VERB): Bewitch

Synonyms: captivate, enrapture                
Antonyms: disenchant, disgust
Example Sentence: I was totally engrossed by her beauty.

3. Austere
Meaning: severe in manner
Synonym: exacting, formal, cold
Antonym: flexible, bland, calm
Sentence:Quickly the light died out of his face, leaving it stern and austere.

4. MOUTHY (ADJECTIVE): Talkative
Synonyms: chatty, gabby                                      
Antonyms: reticent, silent
Example Sentence: He is an extremely mouthy boy.


Synonyms: affable, elegant                            
Antonyms: awkward, inelegant
Example Sentence: Ranvijay has a debonair personality.

6. DANK (ADJECTIVE): moist

Synonyms: clammy, muggy                          
Antonyms: parched, dry
Example Sentence: The middle section of the house is fully dank.

Meaning: Servile flattery; exaggerated and hypocritical praise
Synonym: applause, commendation, flattery
Antonym: abuse, criticism

8. Prudent
Meaning: Careful and sensible; marked by sound judgment
Synonym: wise, sensible, reasonable
Antonym: careless, indiscreet, inattentive
Sentence:"That sacrifice may also be a prudent action," observed Madeleine.

9. Allure
Meaning: the quality of being powerfully and mysteriously attractive or fascinating.
Synonym: attraction, lure, draw, pull, appeal, glamour
Sentence: people for whom gold holds no allure"

Meaning: involving immoral or dishonourable actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt., dirty or squalid.
Synonym: sleazy, seedy, seamy, unsavoury,
Antonym: immaculate, high-minded, respectable
Sentence: "the story paints a sordid picture of bribes and scams"
